Beyoncé and the Oversimplification of Women Through Beauty

Background: Singer Beyonce Knowles has often stated that she is a feminist and supports the movement towards gender equality. But it seems as though how she presents herself as a performer come in conflict with her personal conflict. The author argues that her argues are oversimplifying the feminist movement by oversexualizing herself (not just her but other female artists like herself).

How I Used it: This article supports the part of my arguement that women in the media are giving a wrong interpretation of what feminism is. Even though is article only really focuses on Beyonce, she is becoming an important aspect to the feminist movement because she is one of the most influential people in the world.

Backgound: Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche is a renowned Nigerian author and feminist. She was giving a lecture at a TEDx event in which she argues how we should all be feminists

How I Intend to Use It: Her lecture was featured in Beyonce’s song “***Flawless:” so I wanted to look up the video and learn more about why she believes we should be feminists and other ways her lecture could tie into my own arguement.

 The Framing of Feminism

Background: This article examines how feminists and the feminist movement in media. This study also presents how powerful the media is with how the present news to the public.

How I Used it: I used this article to get a better understanding of how exactly powerful the media. This article helped me form a clearer thesis and helped me support my causal arguement in which the basis of that was how media frames the way feminism is presented to the public.

Time to challenge what’s considered sexy

Background: With time society changes the perception on what is considered beauty. Women strive to be “perfect”and try so hard to get rid of their flaws. This causes a conflict with our felinity by creating this mold of perfection that impossible to achieve.

Background: 2013 was a big year for feminism. Women in the media brought attention to the feminist movement whether it was good publicity or bad publicity. Further into the article, more authors state their opinion about how women in the media or hindering and progressing the feminist movement.

How I Used It: I used this article as evidence to support and oppose my thesis by discussing how feminism has been portrayed in the media. There are quotes provided from women on both sides of the debate in which that helped me gain a little insight about how women in general feel about the actions of these singers..

Social Media Sharpens Our Feminist Solidarity

Background: Social networks have played a huge role for feminists and feminism. The internet has allowed feminists to voice their opinion while furthur educating themselves and each other about feminism. This article also briefly discusses the ongoing debate between black and white feminists.

How I Used It: This article does not support my thesis but instead argues about how social networking has helped feminist. I used the information given in my rebuttal argument when I discussed how social media has helped in progressing the feminist movement.

Post Feminism and Popular Culture

Background: The third wave of feminism unspoken objective is to complete the tasks that were left unfinished in the first two waves of the feminist movement. The third wave of feminism began in the 1970’s and is still going on today. “My [the author of this essay] argument is that post-feminism positively draws on and invokes feminism as that which can be taken into account, to suggest that equality is achieved, in order to install a whole repertoire of new meanings which emphasise that it is no longer needed, it is a spent force.”(McRobbie, 255)

How I Intend to Use it: This article does not exactly provide evidence to support my thesis, it does provide other useful information about issues that women face in general and how affects the direction that the feminist movement is going.

23 Ways Feminists Have Made the World a Better Place for Women

Background: Feminists have worked hard to make the world a better place for everyone and succeeded. Feminists are not just involved in their own fight for justice and equality but in other areas such as gay marriage, equal education oppertunites and to put an end to racial discrimination.

How I Intend to Use It: This doesn’t help support my initial argument at all but it provides enough examples to make a counter argument. I will use some of the arguments listed when I discuss how feminists are given themselves a positive image for themselves despite what others may argue.

 The Sexualization of Pop Music

Background: In the past year actress Rashida has spoken out about the sexualization of pop music. Even though she os not feminist, the author does note that she is making feminist-like statements. Singers who are notorious for committing oversexualized behavior, such as Rihanna, Miley Cryus, and Katy Perry, are criticized by Jones for their “interpretation of sexy.”

How I Intend to Use It: I will use this article to argue how the oversexualizing in the entertainment business has not helped progress the feminist movement. What makes this article different is the fact that the person who is speaking out against the oversexualization we see everyday is in the same industry as the women she is speaking out against. What is also interesting is that Jones does not even claim to be a feminist, she is just tired of seeing overexposed bodies and provocative dance moves.

Sexist Portrayals Of Women Still Dominate Prime Time TV: Study

Background: Even though our entertainment industry has made progress to how women take on more active roles on television, women are still underrepresented in the media. Yes, compared to 10 years ago there are more women-driven projects but men still outnumber women in all aspects of employment in the entertainment industry and they are still being oversexualized.

How I Intend to Use It: I used this article to make a small comparison to understand how women today are being represented or underrepresnted in the media which helped my rebuttal essay somewhat.

What Does It Mean for Feminism if Feminism Becomes Trendy?

Background: It’s not secret that 2014 was a big year of Feminism. Women of pop culture have openly embraced the movement. But is it because being feminist is popular again or becuase people have recognized and support what the feminist movement is about? This article looks at the pros and cons of the newfound publicity that feminism has attracted.

How I Intend to Use It: Even though is more of personal opinion, it’s still a good source to use to support my thesis. The author makes a lot of good points about how feminism is   portrayed in the media and it’s more relatable because of the personal touch to it.
